The Three R’s of the Rejection Process

Sadly, rejection is a part of the writing process. If you’ve never received a rejection for any of your hard work, my hat is off to you.

Whenever we receive a rejection in the mail, we don’t decide it’s not good enough for anyone, simply because one editor or agent rejected it. We all know it’s a grueling game we’re playing.

The next obvious step is to re-read what we’ve written and see if there’s anything we might want to change before resubmitting it to another market. And we MUST resubmit. It’s the name of the game.

Which means the first R of the rejection process is Read. We must sometimes, although not always, rethink our strategy and see if corrections can be made to improve our writing before sending it out again.

The second R is RIGHT. Through the process of re-reading our work, the next step is to revise what we’ve written, or make it RIGHT. Once that is done, we’re ready for the final step, which is to RESUBMIT – the third R.

Need a recap?

The Three R’s of Rejection:

Read it
Right it
Resubmit it.

It’s as simple as that.

What a great, positive attitude you have.

Me? I just stuff it in a rejection file never to be seen again and move on to something else. Sad but true. I haven't resubmitted anything that was rejected. Not a good trait, I know. I'll try to learn from your post.

Great advice.

Surprised that you haven't practiced the 3 R's even if you didn't have a name for it, Beth.

Have a couple of things out that I hope to hear about SOMETIME! LOL
